DECEMBER 8-DECEMBER 12

We are now in the busy season of Advent. Monday, December 8, is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Mrs. Mills' first grade is in charge of planning the mass. We invite all of you to attend. Mrs. Mills' first graders will be doing the readings, bringing up the gifts and singing. Everyone will be participating in some way. We hope to see you there. Mass is at 8:15.

Please remember to send in your flour, sugar, or salt for the needy families. Mrs. Carroll has already been by to pick some of it up. Another reminder is the toy drive. Bring your wrapped gift to the classrooms. Remember this year at OLM we are concentrating on service to the community. These are two great ways in which to participate.

A big thank you to all the parents that helped with the Indian Pow Wow. We think it was a great success and we know the children thoroughly enjoyed it. We hope you did too. Another thank you to all of you that drove to The Nutcracker. Your help was greatly appreciated.

The Christmas program is Wednesday evening at St. Patrick's at 7:00. It is one great way to get into the Christmas spirit. Please come and enjoy. Our OLM band will also be entertaining us prior to the program.

We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with your family. At this time of the year we do have so much to be thankful for. And now the Advent season is upon us. Please remind your children that Advent is a time to prepare ourselves for Jesus' birth. It is a time to think about giving to others. The first graders are being asked to donate white sugar, salt, or flour for the "Spirit of Christmas" dinner that is held every year. Bags of food are distributed to those in need.

Thursday, December 4th the first graders will be attending the Nutcracker Ballet. Please make sure your child has his/her permission slip in. We will be contacting our drivers on Monday.

NOVEMBER 17-NOVEMBER 21

It was good to see all of you at our conferences. Things are getting busy. The first graders made the turkey table decorations for the Thanksgiving dinner this Wednesday evening at 6:30. It will be at the Parish Hall. Mrs. Bellini's class will be performing and they have been asked to be at the Parish Hall by 6:00. We hope to see you there for the delicious meal. At this time we would also like to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. God has been so good to all of us.

A permission slip went home for The Nutcracker Ballet. Mrs. Bellini and Mrs. Mills' are taking care of the cost of the performance. We received a very nice check from the Halloween Carnival and this is one way we are using the funds for the class. Please make sure the permission slips are returned before we leave for Thanksgiving vacation.

In Language Arts we continue to work on vocabulary, plurals, word endings, short vowels a, i, o, categories, sequencing, main idea, comprehension, blends, digraphs, cause and effect and inferences. Welcome to conference week. We are looking forward to seeing you. The ITBS scores have come in so we will be reviewing those with you also. Remember dismissal is at 12:30 all week.

On Monday there will be a Veteran's Day celebration in the auditorium at 8:30. We will be honoring all veterans. Please come if you can make it. The book fair is also being held this week. When you are done with your conference feel free to attend the book fair. There are many good books that your children are able to read.

Things are continuing as they are in the first grade. We are not giving any new vocabulary words this week as we really want your children to work on the vocabulary words that have already gone home. Some children are still struggling with them and it is showing up on their reading workbook packets. Please work with vocabulary words on a nightly basis and have your child read to you. Thank you for your support.

Mrs. Bellini's class is busy practicing for the Thanksgiving Program which will be on Wednesday, November 19. Both classes are studying about the Native Americans. Please make sure your child has his/her old, white, large T-shirt in by Wednesday, November 12. They are needed for an art project.

Thank you for continuing to sign the planners. You are doing a great job! If you have read this blog another "high 5" would be great. We did not get many last week. Thank you to those we did get. Have a great week and we will be seeing you soon. GOD LOVES YOU!

The children thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Thank you to the Pellicano's for supplying the snack. Everything was greatly appreciated.

We are entering Red Ribbon Week. Your child should have brought home a flyer that gives information on all of the activities for the week. The activities are as follows:

OCTOBER 13-OCTOBER 17

We are now into the beginning of the second quarter. Report cards will go out on Friday. They need to be signed and returned by the following Friday. It is a new quarter and it is a good time to remind your children to think about always doing their best work, to complete their work, and to work quietly in the classroom.

Several permission slips for the Pumpkin Patch have not been signed and returned. Remember they are due by Friday, October 17. A number of parents have offered to drive, but many of you do not have the insurance forms, car registration forms or driver's license copies turned into the office. These must be turned in by Friday, October 17. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

We are now in Level 2 in Reading. We continue to work on vocabulary, cause and effect, categories, sequencing, contractions, plurals, short a and short i, the digraph th, possessives and the s, ed, and ing endings added to base words. In Math we are finishing up addition and will be starting subtraction this week. Please continue to review math addition facts and to start working on math subtraction facts at home. We will be giving timed tests in both addition and subtraction. In Social Studies we are beginning a unit on the United States and its symbols. We are finishing up the ecosystem in Science. In Religion we will be starting to learn about the saints.

We will be testing your children on vocabulary words during the next 2 weeks. Please review these words nightly. The reading workbook pages can be difficult if your child does not recognize the vocabulary words.

OCTOBER 6-OCTOBER 10

We are done with the ITBS testing. Thank you to all of you that brought snacks for the first graders. It was really appreciated. The quarter will be ending this Friday. There is a Safe Environment Training on Monday at 6:00 in the auditorium. If you want to drive for field trips you must have attended one of these meetings. We know that many of you have already done so. Picture retakes will take place on Tuesday, October 7. Please make sure you return the original photos. And Saturday, October 11, Think Pink takes place at Morning Glory at 11:00.

The month of October is the month of the Rosary. We strongly encourage you to say the rosary at home as a family. We will be praying the rosary at school every Thursday morning. Your children are welcome to bring a rosary from home. We also have ones they may use if they do not have their own.

The first graders are moving right along. In Reading we have finished the first level and are moving into the second level. We continue to work on cause and effect, categories, the digraph th, contractions, drawing conclusions, sequencing, plurals, the ed and ing endings, short a and short i, comprehension and vocabulary. In Math we are still working on addition. The timed tests on addition facts are going well. In Science we are still working on the ecosystem. SEPTEMBER 29-OCTOBER 3

Welcome! This is a busy week. ITBS Testing begins on Monday and will finish for the first graders on Thursday. Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest this week and has a good breakfast before he\she comes to school. On Friday we will have an all-school Mass at 11:00, followed by the Blessing of the Animals. Animals should be brought to school at 11:00 if you are going to bring one. Dismissal is at 12:30 on that day.

In Reading we are working on cause and effect, categories, the digraph th, plurals, ed and ing endings, short a and short i, vocabulary, and comprehension. We will be introducing contractions this week. In Math we are continuing math addition facts up to 12 and are giving the timed tests. In Science we are still on the ecosystem and in Soc Studies we are finishing up communities, laws, rules, rights, etc. In Religion we will be talking about God's promise to always love us and how we are to treat one another. We will also be discussing how the month of October is the month of the rosary. In Spelling we will be learning about short i. A reminder for the spelling challenge words. In Reading we are continuing to work on vocabulary, short a, comprehension, cause and effect, sequencing, the ed ending added to a base word, and the digraph th. In Science we continue with the ecosystem and in Social Studies we are reviewing laws, rules, leaders, communities and the Golden Rule. In P.E. we have started a jump rope unit. In Math we are working on addition facts up to 12. This week timed tests will be given if the teacher feels the class is ready to being this daily task. It would be a good idea to get flashcards and work on them nightly. In Religion we are learning about God's creation and how we are to care for all of it by being kind and helpful.

Just a reminder: Please check your child's planner every night and sign. If homework goes home to be completed or to redo please return the following day. When readers go home they are to be read to a parent and returned the next day.

SEPTEMBER 15-SEPTEMBER 19

It was good seeing all of you last weekend for the Open House. On Tuesday evening, at 6:00 p.m. there will be a Safe Environment meeting for those who have not ever attended one. This is a necessity if you are working in a classroom or want to drive for field trips. The catalog sale ends on Wednesday. We hope you are still selling. Progress Reports went home on Friday and they are due back next Friday. Remember to sign them. Thank you to all of you that are very diligent about signing your child's planner. We know this is a new thing and you are doing great!

The first graders had their first Spelling test on Friday. This week we will be adding two challenge words. These will be words that do not go home to study. They are words your child should be able to spell because you can hear all of the letter sounds in the word. You can help your child by giving him/her other 3 or 4 letter words that have the short a sound in the middle.

We will be introducing addition facts up to 12 this week. In about a week we will start giving daily timed math fact tests. This will just be for practice. It is a school-wide goal this year to better our math computation skills.

In Social Science we are talking about rules, laws, leaders, and communities. In Science we are studying the ecosystem. In Reading we are working on sequencing, cause and effect, plurals, short a, categories, comprehension and vocabulary. Please review the vocabulary. There are workbook pages which can be difficult to do if your child does not know the vocabulary.

SEPTEMBER 8-SEPTEMBER 12

We are hoping to see you at the Open House. Classrooms will be open at 11:00 and will close at 2:00. We also hope you are continuing to sell items for our catalog sale. School pictures will be held on Tuesday, September 9th and Wednesday, September 10th. We never know which day will be ours.

This week your children will start spelling. A spelling list will go home on Tuesday and they will have a practice spelling test on Thursday and will then take the final spelling test on Friday. The Friday test is the grade that will be recorded. We will also be adding challenge words in a week or two.

This is in regards to the reading packet that was on the front of your child's work on Friday. Each reading workbook packet is worth 25 points. We have chosen that number as many of the answers are given to your child, and some of the pages do not have much on them. The grade that your child receives on this packet is a good indicator of their progress in reading.

Progress reports will be handed out on Friday. They are to be read, signed and returned to the teacher.

Just a reminder:

All planners are to be signed and returned the following day. Please take time to read and sign it. It is your child's responsibility to take the planner home and to bring it back.

Some of your children are unsure of the meaning of these math terms: before, after, less than, fewer than, greater than and more than. We are working on them in class and it really helps if they are reinforced at home. We are getting ready to take a math test on all of the things we have covered over the last several weeks. It is important to review their math papers. Once we start addition we will be giving addition timed tests. That is one of our school's goals this year: to improve in math computation.

If your child is having a birthday, treats are welcome. Just let the teacher know in advance. If your child is having a party, invitations may not be passed out at school unless all the class is invited or it is an all girls or all boys party. There are 18 children in Mrs. Mills' class and 19 in Mrs. Bellini's class.

SEPTEMBER 1- SEPTEMBER 5

We hope you are enjoying your 3-day weekend. We also hope to see all of you on Sunday, September 7 for Open House. Remember, Open House, is just that. It is a time to see your child's classroom, see the schedule, look at curriculum, to view some of your child's work and to enjoy the day. It is not a time to discuss your child's progress. Progress reports will be coming out in a couple of weeks. If you need to meet with either of us you are more than welcome to set up an appointment through the office. Thank you for your support and cooperation in this matter. Classrooms will open at 11:00am and close at 1:00pm. A wonderful tri-tip dinner will be in the auditorium from 11:00am until 2:00pm. Friday, September 5, is a Mass day and dismissal is at 12:30. A reminder: girls must wear their jumpers and the boys must wear their blue cords.

Thank you to all who sent in the oranges. We sliced them on Friday and they were enjoyed by the first graders.

A few reminders:

Please work with your children on vocabulary words, color words and number words.
Please make sure you check the planner, sign it and return it.
A note went home on Friday to help you understand why we want the vocabulary words signed and returned. We then send them back home to stay.
Next week we will be starting spelling.

AUGUST 25-AUGUST 29

Your children are now into their third week of school. They seem to be getting into the swing of the routine. We will be starting centers this week on Wednesday. We will be starting Computer and will be heading for the library. Your child is allowed to check out 2 books to take back to the classroom with them. When they have free time in class they are encouraged to take them out. We have also started our first story in our reading program. Some of the readers may seem easy to you. But that is a good thing. Easy books are great for improving your child's fluency. They will be bringing home the reader one night a week. Be looking for it.

Several reminders:

If your child is absent please send a note when your child returns and your child is to take it to the office before they come to the classroom. Likewise, if your child is tardy he/she must go to the office first to get an admittance slip. Your child is considered late if they are not in the classroom when the 8:00 bell rings.

All planners need to be signed beginning Monday, August 25. All homework that is to be redone or completed must be returned the following day. If your child has homework to be corrected, please send back both the original and the new one.

Your child should know all of the color words and the number words up to twelve. If they do not, please work with them at home. Continue to work on vocabulary words.

Week of 8-18-08

Wow! We have all gotten through the first week. Your children have gotten off to a great start and are quickly beginning to understand the routines in each classroom. The first 4-6 weeks are spent reviewing the letters of the alphabet and the sounds that they make. Time is also spent on recognizing color words and number words, zero to twelve. New vocabulary words will be sent home on a weekly basis. It is very important that your child is able to read the vocabulary words. These are the words that will be used in the upcoming story. Please take time to review the vocabulary words nightly with your child. It is a good idea to make flashcards using 3 by 5 cards. Weekly work is sent home on Fridays. Please go over these papers with your child.

Your children put in a full day of work in our classrooms. Homework consists of studying for a weekly spelling test, reviewing vocabulary words and reading the story of the week. Other homework may include a math paper, occasional projects or work not completed in class during the day. Homework must be returned the following day. The student planner is a new addition to the first grade. It is considered homework. Therefore, if it is to go home it needs to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned the following day. We want your child to become responsible. If your child does not return homework or the student planner with a signature your child will sit out his/her first recess. They are still able to have their snack and use the bathroom.

A few reminders:

Make sure your child knows whether he\she is buying a hot lunch.
All school supplies were to be in by Friday, if you have not sent everything in, please do so. Money is also due for the student planner if you have not yet bought one.

If your child arrives before 7:50 he/she is to go into the auditorium until the 8:00 bell. There is supervision. The auditorium opens at 7:30.

Again, the student planners are a new addition. They will not always go home everyday, but when they do, they are to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned the following day. We are giving you all a week to get into the swing of signing the planner. Beginning August 25 your child will sit out if the planner is not signed. The planner will have homework assignments listed and will also contain the spelling word lists when they begin. It is also a great way to communicate.

THE FOLLOWING ARE NEW VOCABULARY WORDS FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 18. This is also a reminder. These are vocabulary words, they are not spelling words.

We hope you all enjoyed the Open House and that your parents enjoyed Grandparent's Day. A fun time was had by all.

This week is conference week and dismissal is at 12:30 each day.

Next Saturday is First Communion for the second graders. The first grade parents are responsible for the reception that is held after the First Communion Mass. Mrs. Bellini and Mrs. Mills' class each need 2 parents that will transport all of the soda and cookies to the church on Friday morning. If you are available to help please contact your child's teacher. We then again need 2 parents that will be able to help with the reception after the mass on Saturday. If you can help please contact your child's teacher. A reminder: next year your child will be receiving First Holy Communion and the first grade will be hosting their reception. So please volunteer your time if you can. A note will go home on Monday as to what you are responsible in bringing for the reception.

This week in Math, Science and Social Studies we will be finishing up units. We will be taking a cumulative review test on chapters 1-7 in Math. We will be taking a Social Studies test on the United States. In Reading we will still be reviewing all of the things listed every week in the blog. We are finishing up on long a this week and next week will start on long e. You will notice that the spelling word list follows the vowel sounds. There are no vocabulary words this week. This gives you lots of time to review the old words with your child. Some of your children still do not recognize these words. Please work with them. Thank you.

We hope you have a good week. GOD LOVES YOU!

FEBRUARY 18-FEBRUARY 22

We hope you are enjoying another 3 day weekend. Hopefully you are continuing to talk to your child about the season of Lent.

We are moving along in Reading. We have finished the Level 4 reader and are now beginning the Level 5 reader. Your children took a reading assessment last week on Level 4. We started learning about the sound that long a makes. We continue to review blends, digraphs, contractions, compound words, short vowel sounds, cause and effect, categories, sequencing, summarizing, main idea and comprehension. You can help out at home by asking questions about any story they are reading. And please continue to review vocabulary words. Students struggle with workbook reading pages if they do not know vocabulary.

We are finishing up on the United States and weather and the four seasons. We are making a Stations of the Cross booklet in Religion.

The Valentine's party was lots of fun for each class. Thanks for all your support and thank you to those who brought items for the parties and came and helped. it was appreciated.

FEBRUARY 11-FEBRUARY 15

We hope you enjoyed your day off and are ready for a short week with another Monday off next week. Thursday is Valentine's Day. There will be a Valentine's party that afternoon. The room mothers are in charge. Remember to send a valentine for each child in the class. It is also a free dress day. Red, pink or white are the colors.

The first graders did a good job with the Ash Wednesday Mass. We are in the Lenten season and each class will be preparing a morning prayer service. We will let you know when those will take place.

In Reading we are moving into the long vowel sounds. This week we will begin with long a. We continue to review the short vowel sounds. We will also be taking a reading test which will cover the skills your child has learned. There will be no vocabulary words this week. This gives all of your children time to review the old ones.

In Math we are telling time. Please continue to practice money as there will be a math review of all chapters covered.

We are still studying the weather, the 4 seasons and the United States.

In Religion we will be making a Stations of the Cross book. It is a wonderful way to teach your children about the sacrifice Jesus made for all of us.

Have a great week. Try to remind your children to do something extra for the Lenten season. GOD LOVES YOU!

FEBRUARY 4-FEBRUARY 8

We hope those of you who attended the auction had a great time. The first grade auction items were well received. Thank you to the parents who took on those two projects and saw that it got done. A job well done!

Catholic Schools Week was a huge success. Your children had a great time and we met up with their buddies several times. We are sure they shared with you about all the events that took place.

The first grade is putting on the Ash Wednesday mass at school. Some of the first graders will be reading while others will be bringing up the gifts. It is the beginning of Lent so we will be talking in Religion about things we can do during Lent to help us learn and grow. Please talk to your child about one thing they can really work on during Lent. We would like to see your child do something for someone rather than giving up something. This is just a thought. Because we are in the season of Lent the Valentine's party will be low-key. It will be held on February 14 and the room mothers will be in charge. Please make sure your child has a valentine for every child in his or her class.

We will be having a math test this week on money. We will then be beginning time in Math. We start out with the o'clock and then move to half-past the hour.

The other subjects are the same as we continue to review. Another reminder about vocabulary words: please review on a nightly basis.

There will be no school on Monday, February 11, or Monday, February 18.

JANUARY 28-FEBRUARY 1

Welcome to Catholic Schools Week. There are many exciting things happening at OLM. The theme of Catholic Schools Week is: Catholic Schools, Lighting the Way. Hopefully your family poster is done and will be sent to school on Monday. If it is not ready we will gladly take it whenever it is finished. Thank you. The big day of the week is going to be Tuesday. Tuesday is "Buddy Day". It is a BLUE AND WHITE free dress day. Your child should bring a small item for his/her buddy. We would like the item to be kept under $2.00. Some suggestions are: pencils, erasers, memo pads, homemade cookies, candy bars etc. A note written by your child is also a welcome addition. On Tuesday afternoon there will be a pep rally. On Wednesday OLM hosts the annual Cherish Luncheon. The first graders will be part of the entertainment for that day. Thursday will be Decades Day with games and dancing. Friday is the all-school mass that will be held at St. Patrick's Church. Please make sure your child's permission slip has been turned in. A reminder: On Friday drop your child off at St. Patrick's Church by 8:00. Your child will be returning to school by private vehicle. Dismissal is at 12:30 on Friday. It should prove to be a fun and exciting week. Then on Saturday evening is the OLM Parent Club Dinner and Auction.

In the classroom we are still studying about weather, the 4 seasons, the United States, and money. We are dancing in P.E. and learning more about Jesus in Religion. In Reading we continue to review and work on blends, short vowel sounds, rhyming words, contractions, compound words, base words and their endings, plurals, cause and effect, sequencing, summarizing, comprehension and vocabulary words. Some of your children do not know their vocabulary words. Please work with them at home. Another area that can be worked on at home is counting out money. We are using quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. When your child brings home his/her reader you can help with comprehension by asking the following questions:

Where does the story take place?
Who is the story about?
What is the problem in the story or what happened in the story?
How does the problem get solved or how does the story end?
Did you like the story? Why?

In Reading, Math, Social Studies and Science we are still studying the same things as we were in the past week. Counting out money is difficult for some of your children. It is most helpful to work on this at home. This week we are adding the quarter.

JANUARY 14-JANUARY 18

We had a great first week back after Christmas vacation. The children were enthusiastic and ready to learn. Their report cards went home with them on Friday. They are to be signed and returned by Friday, January 18.

In Reading we continue to review cause and effect, sequencing, blends, digraphs, contractions, compound words, predictions, comprehension, short vowel sounds, and vocabulary words. Please continue to review vocabulary words at home.

In Math we will begin a chapter on counting out money. It is important that your child know how to count by 5's. We start out counting pennies, nickels and dimes.
In Science we are learning about the weather and in Social Studies we are learning about the United States and some of its symbols.

In Mrs. Mills' class we are writing dictation sentences for the bonus on our spelling tests. This is something that can be practiced at home. Remind your child that each sentence always starts with an upper-case letter and has to end with punctuation. Mrs. Bellini will be starting this at a later date.

A reminder: Please turn in your money for the auction project. Thank you to all that have already turned it in. There is still time to fill out the Capital Campaign survey that is online. We are keeping a list of all students whose parents have already filled it in. The children of parents who participated in the survey will be awarded free dress on Tuesday, January 15. Thank you for taking the time to fill it out. Don't forget the Family Fifties Night on Friday, January 18. Would love to see you there!

The first grade is responsible for the 60's decade for the 80th anniversary. We will be sending home a flyer in the near future to let you know how we would like your child to participate in this project.

Happy New Year 2008!

We both hope your holiday season was a holy and happy one. As we begin this new year let us remember to keep Jesus Christ first in our lives.

We have finished the second quarter and report cards will go home on Friday. This is a good time to remind your child the importance of doing their best work at all times. It is also a time to talk about their behavior and effort, both inside the classroom and outside the classroom.

A reminder: 12:30 dismissal on Friday.

In Reading we will be introducing the short u sound. We continue to work on sequencing, cause and effect, categories, blends, digraphs, predictions, vocabulary words and comprehension.
