OCTOBER 29-NOVEMBER 2

I hope you all enjoyed the Halloween Carnival. I think it was a great success. Remember students may wear costumes to school on Wednesday. A flyer went home last week regarding the costume contest. On Thursday there will be an all-school Mass. Mass begins at 8:15. Friday is a half day with dismissal at 12:30.

The first graders had a great time at the Pumpkin Patch. Thank you to all of you that were drivers. We do appreciate your help.

In Language Arts and Reading we have finished the 2nd level of readers. We are moving into the 3rd level. We will be working on short vowels a, i, and o. We will also be working on the digraph ch, cause and effect, blends, vocabulary and comprehension. We are really building on our vocabulary. It is so important that you work on vocabulary every night.

In math we are finishing up addition facts up to 12 and we will be going back to subtraction facts. We will also be starting a Native American unit. Mrs. Mills' class is also practicing for the Thanksgiving program.

OCTOBER 22-OCTOBER 26

Halloween is fast approaching. Please remember to send your bag of candy in with your child. Mrs. Mills' class will be going to Day Out this week with Mrs. Keeler's eighth grade to entertain. We will leave at 10:15. On Wednesday both first grades will be going to the Pumpkin Patch. We will leave at 12:30 and will be returning by 2:30. Thank you to all of you that will be driving and have your forms in. It is greatly appreciated.

This week is also Red Ribbon Week, say NO to drugs. Tuesday is crazy sock day and on Friday there is free dress. Red and white is the color theme of free dress.

In Language Arts we will be finishing up our second level of Readers. We will be working on short o, short i, short a, contractions, digraphs, cause and effect, sequencing, vocabulary, and comprehension. In Math we will be adding 3 numbers together. Shortly we will begin giving timed addition and subtraction tests. We will not be charting these timed tests, but simply want a better idea of how well your child knows their math facts. Flashcards are a great way to enforce these math facts. We are finishing up plants. In Social Studies we will start learning about places where people live. Shortly we will be moving into a Native American Unit and in Religion we will start learning about different saints and their lives.

OCTOBER 8-OCTOBER 12

We are now into the month of October. Both first grades will be going to the Pumpkin Patch on Wednesday, October 24. We will leave school by 12:30 and return by 2:30. Permission slips have gone out or will be going out.

Mrs. Mills' first grade class will join the 8th grade in going to Cherish. We will entertain. We will leave at 11:00 and will return in time for the children to have lunch and recess.

We are into the 2nd level of our Reading program, so we are moving right along. We are working on short i, contractions, cause and effect, sequencing, categories, spatial relationships, possessives, vocabulary and comprehension. We just took a cumulative math test covering Chapters 1-3. We are now back into addition facts up to 12. It is always a good idea to review math facts on a daily basis. Flashcards are great for this. We are also learning about plants and what they need in order to grow. In Religion we are learning about God's promise to always love us. Your children are very enthusiastic about all of this learning.
