We are now into the month of October. Many things are happening. The ITBS testing will take place Monday through Thursday. Please make sure your child has a good breakfast and gets plenty of rest. If your child is late or absent remember there are no makeups.
On Thursday, October 4th, we will have Mass at 1:15 to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Following the Mass there will be a blessing of the animals. Please remember that your pet will come with you to the Mass. They are not to be brought to school in the morning.
The month of October is also the Month of the Rosary. We encourage you to say the rosary with your family during this month. We will be praying the rosary on Friday of each week here at school. You are welcome to join us.
Friday is an early dismissal day. We get out at 12:30.
A reminder about the playground: Some of the students are choosing not to follow the rules on the playground with the new equipment. They have been reminded and have been talked to by yard duty supervisors. Please remind your child how important it is to follow the rules in order that everyone is safe. Some children have been warned many times. The next step is a detention. Thanks for your support in this matter.
We have finished the first level in Reading. This week we will be working on contractions, cause and effect, drawing conclusions, vocabulary, short i, and comprehension. In Math we will be moving back into addition facts up to 12. In Science we are learning about the ecosystem and we will be talking about plants.

The school year is moving right along. There is not much news this week.
A reminder: Your children will be taking the ITBS test the week of October 1.
Please make sure they eat a good breakfast and have plenty of sleep. These tests cannot be made up so please try not to make doctor or dentist appointments that week. Thank you for your cooperation.
We will be finishing up the 1st level readers and will be moving on to Level 2. Some of the reading skills we will be working on this week are short a, cause and effect, categories, plurals, ed ending, comprehension and vocabulary. In math we are still working on subtraction, but we will also be reviewing addition.

September 17-September 21
We were happy to see you at the Open House last weekend. We hope you enjoyed your visit to your child's classroom.
Mrs. Mills' class buddied up with Mrs. Keeler's Science class to harvest in the garden. We picked tomatoes, onions, potatoes, corn, green beans, pumpkins, and flowers. It was great fun. Mrs. Bellini's class will be going in 2 weeks. We each go to the garden once a month.
Your children have had their first spelling test and did well. We will be adding bonus words this week. They will be words that your child should be able to spell because they can hear all of the sounds in the word. The bonus words are not the same on Friday as they are on Thursday.
Just an update on a few things: In Language Arts we will be working on adding the ed to the end of a base word. We will also be talking about cause and effect, spatial relationships, short a, comprehension, and our reading vocabulary.
In Math we are moving on into subtraction. Your child just took the Chapter 2 test on addition.
A note to all of you concerning the work packet that goes home on Friday. On the top of the packet is a reading workbook packet that has a number or percentage on it. That is a grade that is recorded as a reading grade. The reading workbook packet is worth a total of 25 points. The reason for this is that we give your child many of the answers, and at times the entire page has been discussed with the answers already given. Hopefully this will help you understand the grading procedure on this reading packet. Your child gets a reading packet grade every week. That grade is a good indicator of how well your child is doing in reading.
Next week you will be able to access your child's grades on the computer. We do correct all work done by your child but we do not grade every worksheet. Tests are graded as are some daily assignments. We will try to get our grades entered into the computer every 2-3 weeks. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

September 10-September 14
We are looking forward to seeing you all at Mass and the Open House! Remember the Mass is at 11:00 and the Open House follows until 2:00. The dinner is available until 3:00. Your children have been working hard and you will be able to see that by the work that is displayed. They took great pride in drawing their family and themselves. Remember Open House is just that. It is a time to look at your child's classroom, the schedule, the curriculum, your child's textbooks and work. It is not a time to discuss your child's progress. Progress reports will be out in one week. If you need to see either of us you may set up an appointment through the office. Thanks for your cooperation and understanding on this matter.
A few reminders:
If your child is having a birthday treats are welcomed, just make sure you notify the teacher that a treat is coming. If your child is having a birthday party please do not send invitations to school unless the entire class is invited. You may send invitations if it is an all boy or all girl party. Children's feelings are easily hurt. Mrs. Mills' class has 18 students and Mrs. Bellini's class has 17.
This week we will be starting weekly spelling tests. Your child will come home with his\her spelling list on Tuesday. Keep it at home and review it nightly. Bonus words are added they day of the spelling test. Bonus words will be words that your child should be able to spell because they hear all of the sounds in the word. A practice spelling test is given on Thursday and the final test is given on Friday.
