MAY 4-MAY 8

It was wonderful to see all the parents and grandparents that attended the May Crowning Mass on Friday.  The first graders did a beautiful job with everything.  They all worked very hard to do their very best.  Thank you to the moms that helped.  The Mass was a good reminder that the month of May is dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Jesus.  This is a good time to pray the rosary as a family, in honor of Mary.

Your child did not bring home their planner as they did not write in it.

Curriculum is the same.  The double digit addition in math is going well.  This is where it is so important to automatically know their math facts to 18.  We do no regrouping of double digit numbers in the first grade.  Some students are still having difficulty with the vowel sounds.  Continue to work on them at home.  They need to know the picture clues for all vowel sounds as well as knowing the signs for both long and short vowels.

Friday morning the Talent Show will take place at 8:30.  You are welcome to come.  It will be in the auditorium.  We do have a few first graders that will be performing.

Shorts may be worn beginning Monday, May 4.

It has been a warm weekend.  I hope you are enjoying it.  If you have read this blog have your child write in their planner 2 rhyming words for long a,  2 rhyming words for long i,  and 2 rhyming words for long o.

GOD BLESS YOU!

Sunday, March 8, 2015

Hi!  I would like to thank all the parents that helped chaperone our trip to the Hilmar Cheese Company.  It was greatly appreciated.  The students had a great time and enjoyed the day.

The third quarter ended on Friday and report cards will be going out on Wednesday.  Because a new quarter is beginning this is a good time to remind your children to always do their best.  When an assignment is given their job is to attend to it immediately and to stay on task.

This is a very short week.  Therefore there will be no spelling words.  I have been sending home a reader 3-4 times a week.  Please have your child read the story to you several times.  Asking them questions about the story will help with their comprehension.  Any questions you ask are good.  When the big hardback reader goes home please do not have your child go ahead to read other stories.  It makes it difficult to introduce the story when they have already read it. Thank you for your help in this matter.  Have your child continue to review vocabulary words.  We review them on a daily basis.

We have been practicing the Stations of the Cross with the 8th grade.  On Wednesday we will travel to Park Merced and will present the Stations to the residents. In the afternoon we will be walking to Mission Gardens to present them again.  Please remember to get in the permission slips.  I will need drivers.  On Friday, March 20, we will again be presenting the Stations to the school.  You are most welcome to attend.  All first graders are participating.  This is a great reminder of what the season of Lent is all about.

In Language Arts we continue to review vocabulary words, short and long vowel sounds, the endings of s, ed, and ing, contractions, compound words, blends, digraphs, cause and effect, sequencing, nouns, verbs, and comprehension.  In Math we are working on counting out money.  Continue to use dimes, nickels, and pennies.  The quarter will be introduced later.  Money can be difficult so working with your child and having them count out money is a great help.

Remember there is no school on Thursday or Friday as teachers will be attending the Religion Conference in Anaheim.

You have been doing a great job of signing planners.

Once again I would like to let you know your children have transitioned well with all the changes that have taken place in their classroom.  You should be very proud of them.  Have a wonderful week.  If you have read this blog have your child write in the planner the names of the two days they have off this week.  God Bless!

Saturday, February 28, 2015

Hi again!  Your children have done a great job this week.  I have been grading some worksheets.  I do not grade every worksheet they do.  You will know it has been graded and entered on Option C if there is a percentage on it.

We will be going to Hilmar Cheese Company on Wednesday, March 4.  We will be leaving the school around 8:20.  Please remember to send your child's booster seat.  The chaperones/drivers have been notified.  It should be a fun day.  A reminder:  your child does not need money, we are all eating the pizza lunch outside in their picnic area and children are to wear their uniform.

In Language Arts we will be reviewing short vowel sounds, long vowel a and i, sequencing, cause and effect, contractions, compound words, ABC order, s, ed, ing endings and sentence structure.
We will begin Unit 5, Level 1,  in Reading.  This is the last unit.  I will be sending home a reader several days during the week.  Please have your child read the story to you several times.  Ask questions about the story.  Remember to review vocabulary words every night. I do vocabulary words everyday in class.

In Math we will begin our chapter on money.  When a homework worksheet goes home it is very important that your child count out the money.  I need to see how they have counted it out and arrived at their answer.  You can help by having your child count pennies, nickels and dimes.  Do not use quarters with them at this time.

You did a great job of signing the planners.  Starting this week if the planner is not signed your child will sit out his/her recess.  The same goes for readers or homework not returned the following day.

A reminder:  If you arrive at school before 7:50 your child is to go to the auditorium.  You are welcome to stay with them.

Have a wonderful Sunday.  If you have read this blog have your child write the answer to this question in his/her planner:  What month is it?  Thank you and have a great week.
