Welcome to Catholic Schools Week.
There are many activities planned for your children so it will be a busy but fun week. This year's theme is "Catholic Schools Celebrate Service". Banners will be on display in the auditorium all week.
Monday the children will be writing notes to their parents.
Tuesday the students will perform acts of service around our school.
Wednesday is the Cherish Luncheon. All students are involved in this in some way. Our first graders will be providing some of the entertainment.
Thursday is "Buddy Day/Spirit Day". It is a free dress day with the color theme being blue and white. There will be a pep rally at 1:30 and the last home basketball game for the "A" teams will be that afternoon at 4:00.
Friday is the All School Mass at St. Patrick's Church. Students will need to be dropped off at St. Patrick's Church instead of OLM School on Friday. Mass will begin at 8:15. All of the first graders will be returning to OLM School on a VIA bus. On Friday afternoon at 1:30 the annual Faculty/Staff vs. 8th Grade Volleyball Game will be held in the auditorium. And dismissal is at 2:30.
And of course the Parent Club Auction will take place on Saturday evening at 5:00. Mrs. Mills' class has made a small quilt with every one's hand. It really is nice and is in display in Mrs. Mills' classroom. Mrs. Bellini's class has someone making a wonderful birdhouse that is a replica of Our Lady of Mercy School. And that is the week.
A note about Buddy Day. Your child will be paired up with an 8th grader. Activities are planned with the first and 8th graders. Your child will need to bring a sack lunch on Thursday. They will also need to bring a treat for their buddy, as that is a tradition. The treat can be cookies, candy, fun pencils etc.
If your child has 2 buddies they will need to bring treats for 2. We will let you know if that is the case. Buddy Day is a always a big "hit" with the first graders.
Your child also needs to bring a sack lunch on Wednesday as there will be NO cafeteria service on Wednesday or Thursday.
Mrs. Mills' class has their projects on Germany due on Monday, January 26. Some have already been turned in. Remember, a grade will be given for this in Social Studies.
This week Mrs. Mills' class will be starting dictation as their challenge in Spelling. A sentence will be given to them orally and they are to print it correctly. Mrs. Bellini will be starting hers at a later date.
Curriculum remains the same, however we are moving back into addition and subtraction in Math. Keep practicing those math facts.

JANUARY 19-JANUARY 23
We hope you are enjoying your 3-day weekend. We are moving right along in the First Grade. On Tuesday we will be watching the Inauguration. You may want to talk to your child a little about it.
The following week will be Catholic School's Week. We have a busy week scheduled. The mass on Saturday evening at 5:00 will be the kick-off. Please have your children wear their uniforms when attending mass next weekend. A first grade parent has generously donated a VIA bus to transport all of the first graders back to OLM School after the All School Mass that is scheduled at 8:15 on Friday, January 30. Permission slips will be going out this week. Please sign them and return them by Monday, January 26. Nest week's blog will give you a detailed list of all the activities that will be going on for Catholic School's Week.
Our curriculum remains the same. Please keep up the good work in signing the planners and returning them the following day. Remember to have your children review vocabulary words on a daily basis. Your children also need to be reviewing math addition and subtraction facts up to 12.

JANUARY 12-JANUARY 16
Greetings and we made it through the first week back after a good vacation had by all. The children were very ready to get back into the groove. The curriculum remains the same. Mrs. Mills' class will be studying about the country of Germany and Mrs. Bellini's class will be studying about the country of France. We will try to get the information you need out this week.
Reminders: There is no school on Monday, January 19, so we have a three-day weekend coming up. Please make sure you read and sign the planners. Report cards are to be signed and returned by Friday. There have been some playground problems in the lower grades, especially when playing soccer. Please talk to your children about the playground rules. There is no shoving, pushing or hitting another child. Yard duty personnel and teachers are giving out detentions. Thank you for your help in this area.

JANUARY 5-JANUARY 9
Happy New Year to all of you. As we begin the New Year let us remember to put Jesus first in our lives. Thank you to all of you that brought in the flour, sugar, salt and the wrapped gifts. You have no idea how much those things meant to the people and children that received them.
We hope your holidays were happy and a bit restful. Thank you to all the parents that helped out with the Christmas parties. A fun time was had by all. Thank you for all of the many gifts that we received. They were greatly appreciated.
The second quarter has ended and report cards will be going out on Friday. Please make sure you sign and return them. As we start the new year and a new quarter this is a good time to remind your child the importance of doing their best work at all times. It is also a time to talk about their behavior and what is expected of them both inside and outside the classroom.
In Reading we will continue to work on short vowel sounds, digraphs, blends, contractions, compound words, word endings, plurals, possessives, cause and effect, categories, predictions, nouns, verbs, comprehension and vocabulary. In Spelling we will be introducing short u words. In Science we are studying weather and the 4 seasons. In Social Studies we are working on the United States. Each first grade class will also be studying a particular country for International Night which will be held in February. Be looking for information on this event. In Math we are still learning about place value. In P.E. we are on a bean bag unit. In Religion we continue to learn about the life of Jesus.
A few reminders:
Friday there will be an all school Mass at 8:15 with dismissal at 12:30.
On these cold days please make sure your child wears a sweatshirt or a coat. Make sure their name is in the sweatshirt. We have lost a few already this year.
