WOW! We are in the last week of the school year. It has gone by so fast. I have really enjoyed the year and have been fortunate to have had a great deal of support from all of you. As you probably know, this is my last year here at OLM. I am retiring and will be moving on to the next phase of my life. I am happy at the thought of retirement, but there is also a great deal of sadness in my heart. OLM has been a huge part of my life for the last 25 years. I will miss it.
I will be sending home a note to let you know some of the things you can continue to work on with your child through the summer months. Please make sure your child continues to read.
THINGS TO REMEMBER:
Your child needs to bring a sack lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thursday is Field Day and the children have free dress that day. Lunch is provided.
Friday there will be Mass at 8:30. Students wear regular uniforms. No shorts.
Dismissal is at 10:00. SUMMER VACATION BEGINS
Have a good week. GOD LOVES YOU!

MAY 13-MAY 17
The days seem to be going by very quickly. On Friday, May 17, the 8th grade puts on the 8th Grade Carnival. It is from 10-12, with dismissal at 12:30. Free dress is allowed that day. The 8th grade will be around to sell tickets on Friday. I would suggest $5.00. That will be enough to play games and to get some food. If that is too much then $3.00 would be good. If your child wants to spend more I usually allow them to buy $5.00 worth of tickets and then have them keep the rest of their money and they can buy more tickets if needed. Usually they do not run out.
Please continue to sign planners and reading packets. No planners went home on Friday.
No more news. Have a great week. GOD LOVE YOU! HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

MAY 6-MAY 10
A very busy week for the first graders is over. Grandparents Day was a huge success and the first graders did a fabulous job participating in the Mass and the May Crowning. They were also very good performing "Spoons". This is also a good time to remind your children that May is the month that we honor Mary, the Mother of Jesus. One way to honor Mary is to pray the rosary.
The talent show will be held Friday morning at 8:30 for grades K-4. It will continue at 10:30 with grades 5-8. You are welcome to attend.
Curriculum is the same with lots of first grade review going on. Your children will be taking a reading assessment on Level 5. I am waiting for a day when all are present. Continue to review vocabulary words and short and long vowel sounds.
A reminder: No spelling test was given on Friday. It will be given on Monday, May 6. No planners or work packets went home.
I know we are near the end of the year but the uniform rules still apply. Some students are wearing the Nike socks with a colored stripe up the back. They are not allowed. Shoes with colored soles are not allowed unless the soles are blue. The only uniform shorts that are allowed are the Dennis shorts. No white sweaters are allowed. The only blue sweater allowed is the Dennis uniform sweater. No nail polish is allowed. If you are unsure check the school handbook. Thank you for your help in this matter.
Many planners and reading packets are not being signed. You and your child are both responsible for this.
Thank you to all of your for your constant help and cooperation. It is greatly appreciated.

APRIL 29-MAY 3
The Relay For Life was a huge success. Thank you to all that participated.
The month of May begins on Wednesday. May is the month that we honor Mary, the Mother of Jesus. One way to honor Mary is to pray the rosary.
Friday, May 3, is Grandparents Day. The first grade is responsible for the all-school Mass on that day. All first graders will be participating in the May Crowning that follows the mass. You are all invited to attend. The Mass begins at 8:15, followed by the May Crowning and then the pancake breakfast. The first grade will also be performing for the entertainment. Dismissal is at 12:30
Curriculum remains the same. We are reviewing all vowel sounds. This is one area that you can be working on with your child.

APRIL 22-APRIL 26
I want to thank all of the parents that came in to share their jobs with us. The first graders really enjoyed learning about your job and how you help the community. It was greatly appreciated.
Progress Reports went home on Friday. They are to be signed and returned by Friday, April 26.
Students may wear the uniform shorts. A reminder: shorts are not allowed on Mass day.
Friday, May 3, is Grandparents Day. The first grade is responsible for the all-school Mass on that day. We will also be participating in the May Crowning. If your child brought home a reading for the mass, please make sure they are practicing it.
Relay For Life is this Saturday, April 27, out at the Merced College Football Field. If you have time come out and walk with us. Hope to see you there. We are having a car wash Monday after school at 2:30. Proceeds will go to Relay For Life.
Please remember to sign the planners and the reading packets.

APRIL 15-APRIL 19
Thank you to all of you that brought in the soda and the cookies. Thank you to the moms who transported the items over to the church and set up. And thank you to the moms that were helping at the First Communion reception. It was all very much appreciated.
Progress Reports will be going home on Friday. Remember they are just that: they are letting you know where your child is right now academically. Your child has time to bring his/her grades up. I think the most important thing you can tell your child is to take their time, read and listen to the directions and to do their best work. It should always be their best handwriting and it should be neat.
Another reminder: the reading packets are not being signed by parents. It is important!

APRIL 8-APRIL 12
I hope you have been enjoying your Easter break. The first grade is responsible for the First Communion reception on Saturday, April 13, at St. Patrick's Church. The mass begins at 9:00 and the reception will take place at about 10:20. A note will be going home on Monday so you know what you are expected to send to school. I need 2-3 moms to help serve on Saturday. I am also in need of 2-3 moms who will transport the cookies and soda over to the church on Friday morning, April 12, and to get things set up for Saturday. If you can help please drop me a note. Thank you for your cooperation.
We have finished all vocabulary words. The Level 5 Reading Assessment will be given in several weeks. In Language Arts we are reviewing long and short vowel sounds, categories, sequencing, cause and effect, problem solving, drawing conclusions, summarizing, main idea, inferences, blends, digraphs, contractions, compound words, root words, endings of s, ed and ing, plurals, nouns, verbs, and comprehension. In Math we are finishing up time and will then begin double digit addition and then go into double digit subtraction. In Social Studies we are still learning about community helpers. Thank you to those that have already shared with us. In Science we will finish up the 4 seasons and then will begin a unit on matter. In P.E. we have started a unit using bean bags. In Spelling we will be working on more long o words. In Religion we will learn more about the Resurrection and then learn about the Holy Spirit.
Please make sure you sign the planners and the reading packets that go home on Monday and Tuesday. The answers that are being written in the planner are very good. I am concerned by the number of students who come back with reading packets and no one has signed them. This is part of their homework and their effort grade.
Dismissal on Friday is at 12:30. I had your child leave their planner at school as I wanted to make sure none were left home by mistake.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your vacation. I will see you all on Monday, April 8.

This will be a short week with dismissal at 12:30 on Thursday. The entire school will close down on Thursday at 12:30 for Easter vacation. There will be NO extended care. School will resume on April 8.
I enjoyed meeting with all of you for conferences. Continue to work on vocabulary with your children and to remember to sign the reading packets and the planners. Some parents are forgetting to sign.
The first and eighth graders did a wonderful job in presenting the living Stations of the Cross. If you came I hope you enjoyed it.
Thank you to all the Community Helpers who have come and shared. The children have really enjoyed hearing about your jobs.
When we return from Easter vacation on Monday, April 8, you need to know that we are in charge of the second grade's First Communion. Students will be asked to bring either cookies or soda. The First Communion mass begins at 9:00 on Saturday, April 13. I will need 2-3 parents who will be willing to take all the cookies and soda to the church on Friday, April 12, in the morning at 8:00. You will be in charge of setting up everything. I will then need 3 parents to help with the reception on Saturday, April 13. I will be sending home a note when we get back from Easter break.
The last vocabulary list is going home this week. We have finished with money and will begin telling time on Monday.
The State of the School Address by Mrs. Blackburn will be Tuesday evening in the auditorium at 6:30. Please try to attend.

This will be a short week with dismissal at 12:30 Monday through Friday. The Scholastic Book Fair will begin on Monday and run through Friday. Our class will preview the Book Fair on Tuesday. Report cards went home on Friday. You may sign and return them this week when I meet with you for conferences.
Thank you to all the drivers that helped out on Wednesday going to Park Merced. The first grade along with the 8th grade will be presenting the living Stations of the Cross at school on Friday morning at 8:00. All first graders will be participating. I hope you can come. It is a wonderful reminder of what Lent is all about.
Please continue to work with your children at home counting out money. We have added quarters and will be spending this week on quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. Next week we will begin telling time.
Thank you to those of you that have come in and shared your jobs with the first graders. It has been a great experience for them. More of you are coming in this week and we are looking forward to it.
Thank you for having your child read the book in the reading packet and answering the question. I tried to star all the answers so you knew that I had read them. Try to vary the questions your child chooses to answer as some are much easier than others. Please have your child answer the question in a complete sentence. Remember to initial the reading packet.
There are no vocabulary words this week. Continue to review the ones that have already gone home.

MARCH 11-MARCH 15
We have finished the 3rd quarter and now are on the home stretch. Once again this is a good time to remind your children there is always room for improvement. Several suggestions: listen to and follow directions correctly, take your time and always turn in your best work, complete your work, take out a book and read or write in your journal when you are finished with your work. Do not bother your neighbors by talking. Report cards will go home on Friday. You may sign and return them when we meet at conferences.
Thank you to all that drove to The Hampshire/Emeritus on Friday. We will going to Park Merced on Wednesday. I will be using all that have signed up to drive.
Thursday evening is the 8th Grade Dinner Show. It is always quite entertaining and the dinner is delicious. Hope to see some of you there.
On Monday and Tuesday a reading envelope will go home with a book in it. Your child is to read the book to you. There is a list of questions on the back of the packet. You should go over them with your child. Your child is to pick one question and answer it. The answer will be written in the planner. This is considered homework. Therefore it is very important that your child complete this assignment, you initial the envelope and return it the following day. Some of the books are easier than others. Easy books are good for improving reading fluency. Harder books challenge your child.
We continue to review counting money. Some of your children are having difficulties. Please work with them every night. We will begin working with a quarter on Tuesday or Wednesday.
I had a good response for Community Helpers. I will be jotting a note in your child's planner to set up a day and time. Thank you for volunteering to come in. It is not too late to turn in your slip if you are still interested in coming in to speak to the class.
St. Vincent lunches are to be brought in on Friday.
There will be an all-school mass on Friday at 8:15. You are welcome to join us.
A reminder: items for the D Street Shelter are due by Friday. This is our Service Project. Please be generous. Thank you.

MARCH 4-MARCH 8
Those of you who had first graders presenting the morning Lenten prayer last week...they did a great job and portrayed Jesus' miracle well. On Friday, March 8, we will be traveling to Hampshire and Emeritus to present the living Stations of the Cross with the 8th graders. If you have signed up to drive I will need you. If you signed up to drive to Park Merced on Wednesday, March 13, I will need you.
The 3rd quarter will end on Friday with report cards coming out on Friday, March 15.
In math we are beginning a chapter on money. You can help your child by working with pennies, nickels and dimes this week. Make sure you have your child count out the money. On daily assignments and money homework I require the students to write out the amounts counting on. This is the best way for them to learn counting money. Do not work with a quarter this week. A math vocabulary paper will be going home on Monday. Please review the highlighted math words with your child. They are words that will be used and will be on worksheets and math tests.
Beginning next week, every Monday and Tuesday a reading envelope will go home with a little book in it. Your child is to read the book to you. There is a list of questions on the back of the packet. You should go over the questions with your child. Your child is to pick one question and answer it. The answer will be written in the planner. This is considered homework. Therefore it is very important your child complete this assignment, you initial the envelope and return it the following day. Some of the books are easier than others. FEBRUARY 25-MARCH 1
This is late being posted as I just returned from my weekend at the Anaheim Religion Congress.
We will be having a very busy month in March. You will be receiving a permission slip to sign and return as we will be presenting the Stations of the Cross. It is tradition to act out the Stations of the Cross with the 8th grade. We will be traveling to The Hampshire/Emeritus on Friday, March 8. On Wednesday, March 13, we will be presenting the Stations at Park Merced. The permission slip will cover both dates. I will need drivers. On Friday, March 22, we will present the Stations of the Cross at school at 8:00 in the morning. You are all invited to attend. Some of the first graders will be presenting morning Lenten prayer on Thursday, February 28, at 8:00 in the morning. You are welcome to attend. As you can see we will be very busy. And in the middle of all of this report cards will go out March 15.
I will be giving a vocabulary test to all students. You should have all the words at home. That is why your child prints them and takes them home. You can also check the blog. The words that your child will be tested on are on all the blogs beginning with the first blog in January up through the February 18th blog. As I have said many times, it is so important for your child to be reading those words every night. They do not have to spell them.
Friday, March 1, there will be an all-school Mass at 8:15. Dismissal will be at 12:30.

FEBRUARY 18-FEBRUARY 22
I hope you are enjoying the 4 day weekend. There are still a few Progress Reports out. Please sign and return them on Tuesday. Thank you to the parents that helped with the Valentine's Party. The students had a fun time.
We have a short week this week. Dismissal is at 12:30 on Thursday with no school on Friday. The teachers will be attending the L.A. Religion Congress in Anaheim. There will be no spelling words this week.
Lent began on Wednesday. Lent is a season of prayer, fasting and alms. Lent is a time to grow and change and to become closer to Jesus. Please talk to your child about this season in the Church. Sometimes we forget that Lent is not always about giving something up but also about doing something for someone. This season makes it a good time for the first graders to be donating items for the D Street Shelter. If you remember this is our service project. I would like to have donated items here by March 15. Thank you for your support in this matter.
In Language Arts we will be finishing the Level 4 reader. We continue to review categories, cause and effect, sequencing, endings of ing, s, and ed, main idea, blends, digraphs, sentence structure, compound words, contractions, short and long vowel sounds, comprehension and vocabulary. In Science we will be learning about the 4 seasons. In Social Studies we are finishing up the United States and its symbols. In Math we are finishing up shapes and solids. Timed tests will begin on Tuesday with addition facts with sums up to 18. In Religion we will be learning more about Lent and the Stations of the Cross.
The first grade will be participating in 2 morning Lenten prayers and in the living Stations of the Cross at the end of February and into March. If a reading comes home in the planner please have your child practice it at home. Our first morning prayer will be on Thursday, February 28. I will have more dates in future blogs.
REMINDERS:
The math vocabulary is a page that is sent home out of the math workbook. The math vocabulary is highlighted in yellow. It is also highlighted again on their daily worksheets. You can find these in the work packet that goes home on Friday.
Some students are very unsure of reading vocabulary. It is so important that you work on this every night. It is often a reflection of the reading workbook packet scores.
You can help your child by reviewing spelling words every night. You can also assist them by dictating sentences for them to write. This is good practice for them. Ask your child to tell you and show you the hand motions for what a sentence is.

FEBRUARY 11-FEBRUARY 15
This is a short week, as is the following week. Remember we have no school on Friday, February 15. Spelling words will be going home on Monday, with the tests being moved up one day.
Thursday is Valentine's Day. We will be having a party in the afternoon. A note went home on Friday. Make sure your child has enough valentines for the entire class. We have 35 students. All your child has to do is to sign their name on the card. Do not address them. Thank you. Your children have free dress-----red and white. Also on Valentine's Day the faith families are getting together for a blanket drive. A flyer went home on Friday. If you can, send a new blanket with your child. They will be delivered to those in need.
Progress Reports went home on Friday. They are to be signed and returned by Thursday. Remember this is where your child is right now with the grades that have been entered. They still have the rest of the quarter to raise them. Some students are being careless in their daily work and some students have become talkative. Please talk to your children about this.
A FEW REMINDERS:
Please review vocabulary words and the math vocabulary words that have gone home. Some children do not know the meanings of the math words. It is important that they do.
We have been having playground issues with the game of tag. Students are not allowed to play tag because the tag game can get out of hand and students get hurt. There are plenty of other things to play on the playground. Detentions will be given.
If your child is bringing money to buy snacks, juice, cookies etc. please remind them they are not to buy for another child. Feelings get hurt.
.
Only OLM sweatshirts are allowed. A coat or jacket for outside is allowed.
Only blue OLM sweaters are allowed. No white sweaters are acceptable.
Shoes should be black, brown, blue or white. They should not have hot pink, orange, yellow, or any other color soles. If you have a question check with me.
Many students need a box of new crayons. Their crayons are broken, they have lost them, or they only have a few. They have their 8-pack, which is kept in a bin, but they need crayons for their school box. A pack of 16 is plenty. Students are also in need of glue sticks.
Thank you for all of your cooperation and help in these matters.

We had a great week with all of the Catholic Schools Week Activities. A fun time was had by all. Hopefully we are back to a somewhat normal week. Thank you to all that drove back from the church. It was appreciated.
Progress Reports will go out on Friday. They are to be signed and returned by the following Friday. This is a good time to remind your child to always due their best, to follow directions, and to read all of the answers before choosing one. It is also a good time to remind you that your child needs to be reviewing vocabulary words, spelling words, and math vocabulary on a nightly basis. Some children are still rushing, not listening and making careless mistakes.

JANUARY 14-JANUARY 18
This week the WASC/WCEA Accreditation visitation team will be on campus. Remind your children to be friendly and to answer any questions that they might be asked.
Your children seem to be back into the swing of school. Report cards went home on Friday. Also included was the SLE assessment. They both need to be signed and returned by Thursday, January 17.
You should be aware that there are no longer challenge words in spelling. The challenge now is dictation. Your children did quite well for the first time. You can help your child at home by giving them dictation sentences. Some should be telling sentences and some should be questions. Everything in the sentence must be correct in order to get a point. You can also ask your child to use words and hand motions to tell you what a sentence is.
I hope your child was able to tell you with words and hand motions what addition is. A new hand motion will be in place this week as we continue in subtraction.
REMINDERS:
Dismissal on Thursday, January 17, is 12:30
No school on Friday, January 18.
No school on Monday, January 21, Martin Luther King Jr. Day

JANUARY 7-JANUARY 11
Greetings and Happy New Year. This is a wonderful time to thank God for all the things we have in our lives, especially our children. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and vacation. Thank you to all of you for the many gifts I received. I loved them all. It was very thoughtful of you and I appreciated them. Thank you to all who helped or sent food for the Christmas Party. And thank you for all of the food items for the "Spirit of Christmas" dinner.
The second quarter has ended and we are now beginning the 3rd quarter beginning Monday. Report cards will go home on Friday. This again is a great time to remind your children to always do their best work.
Dismissal will be 12:30 on Friday.
In curriculum we have started the 4th Reading series. The reader is a hardback book. Again, please do not go ahead with your child to read more stories. When your child has read the story before I have introduced it, the introduction to the story gets lost. Thank you for your cooperation. In Science we will be finishing up animals and will begin a unit on the weather. In Math we will start a new unit with math facts up to 18 and then continue with subtraction facts beginning with 18. In Social Studies we will be working on the United States. In Religion we will be discussing what happened after the birth of Jesus. In Spelling we will be working on short u words. We will no longer have challenge words but will have dictation. All words in the sentence must be correct in order to earn the extra point. That will include capitalization and punctuation. We will be practicing dictation this week. In P.E. we will finish up jump ropes and start a bean bag unit. Timed tests will be combining subtraction and addition facts to 12. Some students are not showing much improvement. Please work on this daily at home. I should see progress if you are working at home with flashcards.
